Refreshing new pop/soul songstress Nahli, opens up about being a musician in 2019 and tells us everything we should know about her lushly alluring, modern RnB track called Relapse – which is out via ALKMY Records, the new label from pioneer grime producer DaVinChe.
Hello Nahli please introduce yourself to our readers:
Hi I’m Nahli and I’m snuggled up in bed writing this because it’s bloody cold. I’ve just had a cup of tea and a banana and my ears are ringing because I listened to music way too loud all day.
Tell us about your new single Relapse, what’s it all about?
Relapse is a really beautiful track. I can say that about it without feeling weird because I’m just really proud of what DaVinChe and I created. I’m actually so proud. It reminds me of all the turmoil I was feeling at the time, we actually wrote it a year ago whilst I was in the midst of the emotion. It’s about a time when I was trying to work out whether to go back to an ex fiancé after a really painful and sudden breakup. That shit was awful.
Describe your sound in 3 words!
Moody, honest, soulful.
What’s the best thing about being a musician?
The best thing about being a musician is being able to express my inner feelings that I couldn’t find the words for at the time, to the people I really wanted to hear it. I know he’s probably listened to it and he will learn to realise the extent of the pain he inflicted. I felt abandoned. Aside from that, I also love the fact that I can share my experiences with others who are in the same place who can relate or understand the words I’m singing on a deeper level and find some solace from it.
And the worst?
The worst is that I’m always kinda broke. Music can be draining on your emotions because it feels like a constant fight. You’re the only one who can achieve this for yourself, so the pressure can feel really weighty sometimes. If anything goes wrong or isn’t achieved you instantly blame yourself but on the other hand it’s one of the most beautiful and powerful ways to feel supercharged and elevated when things go exactly as you wanted them to. It’s a tricky thing to find balance in it but I wouldn’t have my life any other way. I’m in love with music above anything else. Takes a hold of every emotion I have possible. It’s an addiction.
Which other artists inspire or influence you? if any.
Billy Eilish, Amy Winehouse, MJ, Otis Redding, Savage Garden, George The Poet, Radiohead, Kate Bush. That’s such a random bunch. I dno I’ve just got so many artists that I truly love. I could go on and on.
What music are you listening to right now?
Billy Eilish, Pink Sweats and Pete Josef.
What are your hopes for 2019?
TO RULE ZEE WORLDDDD *plankton voice from spongebob squarepants*
Nah I’m just excited to watch my music unravel in front of my eyes and I’m genuinely trying to become someone who decides to really enjoy the ‘now’. I’m someone who always gives myself anxiety by looking too far into the future and wondering what’s going to happen but I’m trying to teach myself to just enjoy the ‘now’ and let life pan out as the universe intended. I’m excited to share my music with more and more people and make more and more connections throughout the year.
