The London dream-pop scene has a new frontrunner: high jump. The duo, comprising Harry Martin and Rick Holland, released their poignant new single Tide Away featuring Jamie Maier, via Tip Top Recordings. This track paves the way for their much-anticipated debut EP, further refining the electronic dream-pop sound that has garnered them acclaim from both media and Spotify’s editorial playlists.

Formed in the creative minds of Harry Martin and Rick Holland, high jump is swiftly carving out a niche with their atmospheric and rich soundscapes. Their music, originating from guitar and synth jams, evolves into comprehensive tracks marked by hypnotic beats and ethereal production. The sound is celestial and immersive, drawing comparisons to early Jungle while maintaining the distinctive qualities of Mount Kimbie, Jai Paul, and SOHN.

Tide Away, mixed by Max Cooke known for his work with GoodBooks and Ellie Goulding, shifts gears from the vibrant ambiance of high jump’s earlier singles to a more nuanced, textural, and emotional sound. It delves deeper into the downtempo vibe set by their first releases. Jamie Maier from Tungz adds soulful vocals to the mix, complementing the band’s subdued beats and shimmering guitar work to create a lush, dynamic soundscape.

Discussing Tide Away, the duo reveals the song’s organic inception with Harry starting the piece on the piano, inspired by Frank Ocean and James Blake’s artistry. The track, conceived with a deeply personal narrative, grew from its piano roots to feature fingerpicked guitars and a moody backbeat, echoing influences from Big Red Machine and Bon Iver, all while leaving room for Maier’s compelling vocal delivery.

They explain: Harry started Tide Away at the piano in early 2023 having spent time listening to artists like Frank Ocean and James Blake.

Unusually determined to finish the song before getting distracted by production ideas, the track maintained its intimately first-person narrative feel. The melody needed a steely vocal to cut through the subtle arrangement, so Jamie Maier of the band Tungz kindly lent some grit to the offering. In the mixing process, the embryonic piano was replaced by fingerpicked guitars, dueling over an increasingly moody backbeat – inspired by Big Red Machine and Bon Iver – and leaving space for Jamie’s soaring vocal.

Lyrically, we drew upon similar themes to our previous single CLIIAL: over-nostalgia and reconciling our view of the world as children with our view of the world in adulthood. A morning run along the beach during a trip back home was the visceral inspiration for Tide Away, as it seemed to encapsulate that conflict between the ‘places I remember’ and the range of sentiments they induce.”

Thematically, Tide Away continues the narrative threads from their previous single, CLIIAL, exploring themes of over-nostalgia and the stark contrast between childhood perceptions and adult realities. The song’s lyrical inspiration came from a reflective morning run along the beach, symbolizing the internal conflict between cherished memories and their accompanying emotions.

Following an industrious phase of composition, production, and partnership, high jump made their mark on the music scene with M2‘ and CLIIAL in 2023, garnering attention from Spotify’s Fresh Finds, among others. High jump keeps their soundscape alive with Tide Away, creating an immersive dream-pop experience that captivates listeners into their reflective and harmonious universe.
