The War On Drugs return with Who’s That, their first new studio recording since 2022; a slow-burning rock anthem that places anxiety, depression and self-doubt inside the band’s widescreen production.
Written and produced by Adam Granduciel at his Burbank studio, the track began during an ordinary morning and quickly developed into something far larger.
The accompanying video, directed by Max Flick, follows Granduciel through a surreal late-night walk across Burbank.
Granduciel explains:
Who’s That was written in 10 minutes somewhere between first coffee and school drop off. It’s a song about trying to love yourself despite things we can’t always control, like the anxiety, depression and self-doubt that may stand in the way of living the life we truly desire.
Anthony LaMarca’s drums and Dave Hartley’s bass support layers of electric guitars and keyboards, with the arrangement expanding around Granduciel’s increasingly direct admission:
It’s only my depression, baby.
Who’s That follows the band’s 2024 live album Live Drugs (Again). Granduciel has also recently extended his work beyond the group, co-producing and performing across Sam Fender’s Mercury Prize-winning album People Watching.
The War On Drugs will bring the track into their expansive live setup during a run of US shows and festivals this autumn. As a first glimpse of their next studio phase, Who’s That reconnects the band’s scale with something deliberately intimate: the daily work of living with your own mind.
