Berlin duo The Nightclubs have released CD-R, an independent single that pairs pulsing synth hooks with glitch and 8-bit textures. Its subject is the personal ritual of making someone a mix CD: choosing the tracks, burning the disc and handing over a piece of your listening life.

The duo say:

On CD-R‘we explore the lost art of making mixtapes and the strange intimacy of sharing music. Burning a CD for someone is kind of like sharing a snapshot of your private universe, an invitation to tune into your frequency. We found ourselves pulling out a CD burner for the first time in years.

Sophie Soraya and Hermie Hemlock draw on minimal synth and electroclash, bringing analogue hardware into live shows that sit somewhere between a concert and a party. CD-R gives that approach a fitting subject: a physical format made for sharing music one person at a time.
