Retro goes metro this summer as the classic drive-in is re-vamped with the launch of the Volvo Starlite Urban Drive-In.
Redefining the cinematic experience, Starlite allows you to escape stuffy cinemas and enjoy the thrill of watching movies on a full-size screen, outdoors.
And we provide ALL the cars! The first of its kind, Starlite premieres with a VIP screening on July 1st and two fabulous public screenings on the 2nd and 3rd, all in the heart of London at the pioneering and ultra-cool Old Truman Brewery.
Starlite is partnering with Volvo, who are supplying a fleet of cars including the XC60 crossover, new C30 Sports Coupé and C70 coupé / convertible, to bring you the best possible viewing experience.
Listen to the soundtrack through the cars’ surround-sound radio system, order pop-corn or cocktails (you won’t have to drive home) from our roller-skating waitresses, even cuddle up on the back seat…
You don’t need a driving license or a car, just turn up, get comfortable in a shiny new Volvo and enjoy the night’s entertainment.
Starlite is the idea of writer, cultural entrepreneur and Shoreditch House Salonierre Damian Barr. “We all grew up with the drive-in dream,†says Damian. “But it never happened in Britain because we don’t have the space, the weather, or that car culture.
I wanted to update the idea and make it work for an urban, eco-conscious audience and this seemed the perfect way to do it.â€
The Starlite program includes two huge movies: one contemporary, one classic. Friday night is Twilight night! ‘Eclipse’, the third installment, is released on July 9th and to celebrate we’re showing the original.
You get to sit in Edward’s car and watch him drive it onscreen. Volvo has a starring role in the fantastic film, another factor that makes them the perfect partner for Starlite. Saturday night will be one of those Summer Nights, as we join Sandy, Danny, the Pink Ladies and the T-Birds at the drive-in for Grease!
“Following on from our involvement in The Twilight Saga, the Starlite drive-in presented a fantastic opportunity to watch Edward’s film in Edward’s cars, either the C30 from Twilight or the XC60 from the more recent New Moon.†says Anita Fox, Head of Marketing Communications for Volvo Car UK.
“Sitting in his car whilst watching him driving it will be a unique experience. And if the English summer delivers, we’ll have C70 convertibles on hand so the audience can watch the film, roof down, as would have been done in the classic drive-in eraâ€.
As if the chance to see two of the most popular movies ever wasn’t enough Volvo Starlite is also offering budding filmmakers the opportunity to see their own work on the big-screen through an exciting fan-film competition.
As well as having their film shown as a trailer before the Startlite Twilight screening, the competition winners will be invited to the July 1st red-carpet Starlite premiere party. The full prize and entry process will be announced in May, when the competition launches.
Whether you’re a die-hard Twihard, a Grease-geek or you just want to live the drive-in dream, make the most of the British Summertime this year with Volvo Starlite – the world’s first urban drive-In.
