Recording together gives musicians room to shape a song as they play. That interplay is central to Penni Layne’s new album, everyday i fall in love, which brings original songwriting and classic jazz repertoire into the same intimate setting.

The Boston-based vocalist and songwriter recorded the collection at Sear Sound in New York City, producing it alongside her husband and longtime collaborator, bassist and vocalist Larry Jackson. Pianist Michael Kanan, upright bassist Neal Miner and guitarist Greg Ruggiero joined the sessions, with the musicians performing live together and developing arrangements through close listening and communication.

That approach gives the album its production angle: arrangements could respond to the players in the room, allowing spontaneity to influence the finished recordings. Layne’s vocals move between jazz phrasing and the direct expression of soul and R&B, keeping the songwriting at the centre.

Four originals written with Jackson sit alongside the reinterpreted standards: everyday i fall in love, fallin’ in love, this time and on top of the world. Jackson also contributes vocals, bringing their shared musical and personal history into the performances.

Across the collection, love appears through flirtation, vulnerability, long-term familiarity and the possibility of being surprised by someone you know well. The original songs extend that perspective into the jazz repertoire, connecting established forms with the couple’s own writing.

The studio method gives those themes a practical expression: each musician has room to listen, respond and influence where a song goes.
