Two special teams from the worlds of entertainment and politics took to the streets of Belfast to raise much needed funds for Concern and Marie Curie, the official charities of the 2010 Belfast Marathon.

Teenage running sensation Ciara Mageean from Portaferry, who is dubbed to be the next Sonia O’Sullivan, and Concern’s Rory Bogue enlisted help from U105’s Maurice Jay and celebrity chef Jenny Bristow in a relay team to raise funds for Concern and Marie Curie while a cross party MLA team made up of Barry McElduff, Conall McDevitt and John McCallister were encouraged by Belfast’s Lord Mayor Naomi Long as they prepared to move off from the starting line at Belfast’s City Hall.

The charities are hoping to raise a combined total of £200,000. Concern’s funds will go to help the work in child nutrition programmes, targeting children suffering from malnutrition, and Marie Curie Cancer Care will provide more nursing hours to terminally ill patients in their own homes throughout Northern Ireland.
