The recording favours a free-flowing performance rather than rigid precision. Lingering notes, natural pauses and instinctive vocal phrasing preserve the intimacy of the original performance, while the expanding production gives the track greater scale.
Trem explains:
Freud represents someone who is deeply anxious and trying to communicate that anxiety to someone they really care about, someone who may not fully understand it. Sometimes, whether in a romantic or platonic relationship, the other person simply can’t relate to what you’re feeling. The song gradually becomes more overwhelming, mirroring the way those emotions build over time. I’m incredibly proud of how the track turned out because it’s an example of the music doing most of the talking, while the lyrics provide the context.
That relationship between arrangement and narrative is the single’s strongest production choice. Instead of relying on dense lyrical explanation, Freud allows dynamics, space and vocal texture to communicate the pressure beneath the words.
Following his earlier releases, Freud expands Trem’s emotionally direct songwriting while preserving the vulnerability at its core.
