Just last week, Jessy Lanza released her DJ-Kicks mix compilation, overflowing with glossy tones and tantalizing rhythms. Today she returns with another exciting announcement, a collection of headline UK / EU tour dates as the new year unfolds. Starting 2022 as she means to go on, playing live to some of the most revered clubs this side of the Atlantic, including London’s Village Underground and Berghain Kantine in Berlin.
Across its 1 hour runtime, Lanza’s DJ-Kicks debut explores the wide boundaries between genres. The seemingly constant melding sound palette slips through nearly every echelon of the dance music genre in a graceful saunter. Radiant and exhilarating, the compilation ebbs and flows like white water descending from the heights of jagged mountain springs. The kaleidoscopic fusion of original tracks from her collaborators, contemporaries, and friends blend together into a rubbery, synthy dance party. Lanza’s track selection feels calculated and coherent, rising and falling through elastic, dancefloor-focused cuts and ethereal ambient breakdowns.
Describing the inspiration and concepts behind the project, Lanza says: “I made this mix to connect the dots. The songs I included are ones that people respond to everywhere regardless of where in the world I’m DJing. I made this in pursuit of the bleary 4 AM feeling; the moment when you hear sweet soul-burner vocals with drum patterns that won’t let you go home. There always has to be melody – whether it’s vocal or rhythmic, there has to be something catchy, something joyful and ultimately something that will connect with the listener.” Lanza’s DJ-Kicks mix comes after recent remixes for Marie Davidson and Kate NV.
In 2020, she released her third LP, All the Time, and its companion piece, 24/7, featuring remixes by Foodman, Martyn Bootyspoon, and DJ Swisha. Lanza is still in the midst of a slew of headline shows as well as a supporting slot with fellow Canadian dance savant Caribou in the US. Tickets can be purchased HERE.
