Throwing a themed party is a great way to organise a gathering with a difference. Whether it’s a birthday celebration, family get-together or just an evening with friends, the right theme can transform the occasion and help you create even more unforgettable memories. Here’s how to throw a killer themed party.

Choosing a theme

First things first: decide your theme. Ideally, you’ll find something that excites you and will be enjoyable for your guests. Popular themes include decades (80s or 90s, for example), movies, TV shows, or even more abstract concepts such as “Casino Night”.

Consider the preferences of your guests and the feasibility of decorating your space in line with the theme. You don’t want to commit to something that adds too much to your plate.

Setting the tone for your party can start with themed invitations. Create a design or use a template that embodies what you’re going for. Colours, imagery and wording may be enough to get the point across, but you can be as creative and imaginative as you like.

If you don’t want the trouble of posting invitations, there are always digital versions. Remember to mention dress codes and if guests need to bring anything specific.

Setting up the space

Decorations are important to transform your space to match the theme of your party. Your approach can be budget-friendly, with DIY decorations and some personal touches, or more sophisticated with professional party planning services. Party and craft stores across the UK offer a wide range of decorations for all themes.

You may also want to reorganise your space to create more room and a better atmosphere for socialising. This is particularly important if you’re hosting a party at home. Lighting and music can also be great additions to set the right tone.

Activities and entertainment

A themed party is the perfect time to engage in activities and games that you may not ordinarily try. Thematic quizzes, costume contests or even local entertainers hired to perform could be fun additions.

For example, if “Casino Night” is your theme, you could introduce some bingo or card games into the mix. Whether or not you play for money is up to you and dependent on who you’re playing with. Whatever you choose, everything should be about having fun!

Food and drink

Every successful party has a great selection of food and drink to keep thirsts quenched and bellies full. A tailored menu in line with your theme can be an extra special touch to further enhance the event.

Finger food and buffet-style food offerings are usually the least hassle and easy for everyone to tuck in. A dedicated refreshments table can also make it simple for everyone to keep themselves topped up. Good luck!
