The inaugural award recognises Common’s work across music and screen, while drawing attention to pay and protection for performers in the age of AI.
SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange presented Common with the 2026 Artist Impact Award at a luncheon in West Hollywood on September 24. The inaugural honour recognises artists whose work spans music, film, television and other creative fields.
For the two organisations, the occasion also brought artist rights into focus. Both advocate fair compensation for performers and protections against unauthorised AI replicas of their voices and likenesses. SAG-AFTRA’s Duncan Crabtree-Ireland said the industry must ensure that technological progress moves forward with artists rather than at their expense.
Accepting the award, Common thanked both organisations for standing up for creative workers:
I’m grateful to be here because SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange have stood up for artists, and I’ve seen that firsthand.
The award celebrates a career that crosses disciplines. Its industry message is just as clear: as artists work across more formats, their rights and earnings need to travel with them.
