Bon Iver will release 22, A Million (10th Anniversary Edition) on 20 November 2026 via Jagjaguwar, opening up the album’s creative process through previously unseen artwork and a new essay by visual artist Eric Timothy Carlson.
Announced ten years after the original release on 30 September 2016, the edition puts the relationship between sound and design at its centre. Carlson explores the symbols, numerical relationships and song titles that gave the record its visual language, revealing how those forms developed alongside the music.
Carlson writes:
The songs were born as numbers, initially an unsettled numerology that calcified over time as the songs came into their own. The idea was to find an icon to hold each track.
Primarily recorded and produced at Justin Vernon’s April Base in Wisconsin, with additional recording in London and outside Lisbon, 22, A Million emerged from hundreds of hours of improvisations, melodic sketches and textures. Its ten tracks connected that exploratory recording process with a graphic identity shaped around numbers, glyphs and recurring imagery.
Carlson recalls first hearing the album’s title from Vernon in a small New York bar. Drawing on a napkin, he inverted one of the two numerals and nested it within the other, creating a form that suggested connection, reflection and a divided self. Their collaboration subsequently extended to i,i and SABLE, fABLE, alongside exhibitions, photography and creative direction.
The anniversary LP comes on Frosted Silver vinyl, with alternative artwork, a soft-touch gatefold and spot UV gloss detailing. It includes the original 28-page lyric booklet, reproduced in three silver inks, plus a new 12-page full-colour booklet documenting the album’s creation. A limited-edition CD arrives in a custom 12-panel “inverted cross” package.
With pre-orders now available, the edition offers a closer reading of a record whose artwork was developed in the same breath as its music.
