Cat Mahatta is an Indie artist who really embodies the artist part, truly harnessing music as an art medium for connection through self-expression. They have just released their debut album Who Cares?, along with the music video to the titular track, describing it as “poetic synth pop performance art”.

Taking shape from a seven year long period of Mahatta’s life, avant-garde 12-track album is informed by their complex emotions and personal narratives experienced over that time. It represents a journey of empowerment and coming into ones’ own as a queer, non-binary person. Mahatta was born in the South of the US to Punjabi and Irish-American parents, raised in the Midwest, and “cultivated on West Coast and European culture.”

Who Cares? is an exploratory and deeply personal offering that looks deeply and spans broadly, a reflection on queer identity and a reaching out into the ether for truth and beauty beyond confining constructs.

The titular track poses the poignant and pertinent question Who Cares? when it comes to the lived experience of queer non-binary at both the worst and the best of times – which of those among us have true regard for the kinds of sorrow and joy that come with this particular type of human experience?

As Mahatta beautifully described it:

It’s an invitation to embrace every truth and twinkle of queerness in every eye.”

Synths carve out buzzsaw valleys and glimmering meadows, defining the varied and ethereal sonic landscape of Who Cares? The 80s vibes shine brightly on tracks like Doll and Beast, with their emotive vocals, while unbounded creativity permeates the entire album, creating an airy, transcendent, and dreamlike space in the universe.

A gently subversive response to patriarchal power structures, Hymn To Dudes is something of an otherworldly feminist anthem, where erratic beats underscore Mahatta’s shimmering vocals sweetly deliver a cathartic response to impossible and frustrating double standards.

Who Cares? is available for purchase from Bandcamp now.
