As we prepare for this year’s Oscars ceremony, movie fans are already trying to work out which categories their favourites might win. Regarding the Best Original Score trophy, the following have all been nominated for their outstanding soundtracks.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (John Williams)

Veteran composer John Williams returned to the franchise for the fifth and final Indiana Jones movie. As well as reworking some classic melodies from the bold professor’s earlier adventures, he also created the new tune known as Helena’s Theme for the character played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The soundtrack was well-received by reviewers despite the movie being considered something of a box-office flop.

The legacy of Indiana Jones can be seen in other areas of popular culture, where the idea of a cool hero searching for legendary objects is now in many genres. The Book of Dead online slot shows how this idea has translated into some of the best bonus slots. Set in a world of Egyptian tombs, it’s played over five reels and features the explorer Rich Wilde. This game has a free spin round with a randomly chosen expanding symbol.

Killers of the Flower Moon (Robbie Robertson)

The next nominee on the list sees the late songwriter Robbie Robertson nominated for the first time. Best known among music fans for his work with The Band, Robertson has provided the music for many of Martin Scorsese’s movies over the years. He spent almost a year working on the score while battling illness and Scorsese said the music helps to unify the mammoth film that runs for three and a half hours.

This is just one of the ten Oscar nominations for Killers of the Flower Moon, which is also in the running for Best Picture and Best Director. While Scorsese has received his tenth nomination as director, Lily Gladstone’s inclusion in the shortlist for Best Actress marks the first time that a Native American has been nominated for the prestigious trophy.

Oppenheimer (Ludwig Göransson)

The challenge for Ludwig Göransson when creating the Oppenheimer score was to transmit the main character’s point of view and internal conflict through music. It was director Christopher Nolan who suggested using violins to convey the broad range of emotions that Oppenheimer feels throughout the film.

The movie starring Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt was a huge success and leads the way at the 96th Academy Awards thanks to its 13 nominations. Poor Things is listed in 11 of the categories while Killers of the Flower Moon has ten nominations in total. Murphy is heavily tipped to win the Best Actor for his powerful performance as the physicist who helped create the first nuclear bomb.

The Rest of the Details
