WE WILL KALEID Release New Single

If you break the song (Lure) down to its primary elements, it really shouldn’t make sense! It kicks off with a back and forth between Jasmina de Boer (vocals, synths) and Lukas Streich (synths, drums), their voices set to a slippery synth bassline and tight, crisp drums. It’s classic trip-hop – think Tricky and Martina Topely-Bird trading bars on Maxinquaye – but crafted using a contemporary sound palette.

The German art-pop duo We Will Kaleid just released Lure, the first single from their forthcoming EP titled Aphasiac. If you break the song down to its primary elements, it really shouldn’t make sense!

Then, the hook hits! You’re thrown into a lush modern R&B space, somewhere between the futurism of an FKA TWIGS and the warmth of a Solange. When it finally fizzes out, you get bopped over the head with some proper, bouncy euro-trash synths. Like I said, before, it shouldn’t make sense, yet it does! And it’s also kinda fire!

The video for the song was directed by Alice Penner and Henry Gill. In my reading, it has something of the early Cronenberg about it. It’s a hallucination where an alien video feed slowly infuses reality, eventually consuming it whole. It’s a poignant comment on our ever-growing addiction to the web, which has been further accelerated by the pandemic. Aphasiac will be out on May 21st, courtesy of Sinnbus Records.
