Sultry badass Brooklyn-based graphic designer (turned performance artist), Vandana Jain shares her wonderfully dark dance single ‘Claw’, taken from her full-length debut ‘Anti Venus’, released on October 29.
The track is a slinking meditation on dualities, most notably the struggle between emotional and physical vulnerability and self-preservation.
We find the same tension exists in the incredible album artwork above crafted by Vandana Jain herself; a stunning self-portrait torn in two, flipped and stitched together.
The message of ‘Anti Venus’ is one of a sophisticated feminist voice, rejecting assumed and tired mores while embracing the more primal and sensual experience of female powerThe rave scene in London and Indian pop music lay beneath Jain’s emotive front and center vocal play.
“Claw” is Jain’s follow up to her first two singles ‘Ecstatic’ and ‘Mask’ from the forthcoming debut as well as her visually striking video for ‘Men With Sticks’, directed by friend and fashion photographer Bon Duke, which was taken from Jain’s debut Vandamner EP.
Although the project is primarily a solo effort, live Vandana teams up with Yusuke Yamamoto, a New York based artist and musician.
Together they re-worked the set with live vocals over thick club beats and spontaneous loops for her monthly residency spot at East Village club NUBLU, as well as Brooklyn side mainstays like 285 Kent, Cameo Gallery and The Rock Shop.
