Cape Town’s resident future kwaai diva Umlilo unveils the video (directed by the talented Tlhonepho Thobejane) for his retro-club banger, ‘Out of My Face’.
Umlilo explains :”Tlhonepho, Art Mataruse and I wanted to gather some of our fiercest and most talented friends to do something weird and wonderful with a powerful message behind it.” “The video was simple, we wanted to flip the switch on what we normally see in music videos and at the same time promote the kind of individuality, equality and diversity we experience on the daily.
It’s a little glimpse into our world. The video is also an unapologetic homage to the queer balls and communities that have embraced differences in people in a world that breeds a lot of hate”.The eclectic gender defying glam squad of rebels in the video for Umlilo’s third single (off his debut EP, ‘Shades of Kwaai’), features the androgynous dance group The Ragdollz, popular drag queen Soneda, performance artist/DJ Angel-ho, model Phoenix Norgaad, contemporary dancers Devan Hendricks, Zani Moleya and hip hop break-dancer Amogelang In the video, these flamboyant characters don chic attire and exude executive realness with the styling expertise of Art Mataruse and make-up by Charli JVR assisted by Liandi Ahlers . Umlilo himself wears some avant-garde couture from up and coming Cape Town designer Maxinne Friesnieg.
“It will certainly make people think twice about what they think they know. They can’t get rid of us, we will only multiply and take over the world,” says Umlilo. ‘Out of My face is produced by Umlilo and mixed by Ross Dorkin.”
