Universal Music Group and ElevenLabs have signed a multi-year strategic agreement to develop a licensed AI music platform where fans can create remixes, mashups and personalised interpretations of participating artists’ work.
The partnership combines UMG’s catalogue and rights expertise with ElevenLabs’ generative audio technology, marking the AI company’s first major-label agreement.
Currently in development, the standalone platform will allow users to work with approved music from participating artists and songwriters. Planned tools include remixing, mashups, alternative track interpretations and personalised vocal experiences.
Participation will be central to the model, with both companies stating that artists and songwriters should share in the value created through the platform. Further AI audio products and fan experiences are also expected to emerge from the partnership.
The most exciting possibilities for AI and music are those that put artists, songwriters, and fans at the center. Responsible AI can inspire discovery, deepen engagement between artists and fans, and unlock new revenue opportunities for the creative community. – UMG chairman and CEO Sir Lucian Grainge
ElevenLabs co-founder and CEO Mati Staniszewski added:
By combining UMG’s global community and rights management expertise with our AI models and products, we’ll enable artists and songwriters to create powerful new experiences for their fans, and ensure they are fairly compensated.
The new service will operate separately from ElevenLabs’ existing products, including its Music API and ElevenMusic creation app.
The agreement brings licensed generative AI closer to consumers, but its value will depend on artist consent, usage rules and revenue sharing.
