Udio and GRAI Adopt New Licensing Framework for AI Music FM PRO TECH NEWS

Music IP Holdings is introducing a patent licensing framework designed to manage how AI-generated music is authorised, identified, distributed and monetised, with Udio and GRAI becoming its first technology licensees.

The system could support licensed services involving covers, remixes and interactive music experiences while giving participating artists, songwriters and rightsholders greater control over how their work is used.

From AI Prompts to Creator Payments

Music IP Holdings manages more than 24 issued or allowed patents, with over 50 additional applications pending.

According to the company, the portfolio covers the full AI-content process, including prompts, moderation, authorization, watermarking, identifier tagging, licensed distribution and payment. Its scope extends beyond music to video, film, animation, images, text, voice and likeness applications.

The patents are now available through an online licensing platform intended to make the framework accessible to AI developers.

Udio and GRAI Become the First Licensees

Udio and social music platform GRAI are the first companies to license the portfolio.

Udio plans to use the infrastructure as it develops AI experiences built around music-industry partnerships. Its licence also includes measures intended to restrict the unauthorized redistribution of AI-generated material outside its service.

GRAI is developing a social streaming platform that allows listeners to interact with and transform music. The company says its model is trained on licensed material and designed so that participating artists and songwriters can be credited and paid when their music is played or changed.

Both agreements position AI music around authorized interaction with existing works rather than unrestricted generation.

UMG Adds Rightsholder Weight

Music IP Holdings was formed through a partnership involving Universal Music Group and Liquidax Capital.

Under UMG’s existing collaboration with the company, participating artists, songwriters, affiliates and other rightsholders will be able to use the portfolio as an additional layer of protection against unauthorized generative AI activity.

Barefoot Media is supporting the commercial rollout and helping develop licensing opportunities across the creative and technology industries.

A Possible Infrastructure Layer for AI Music

The announcement reflects a broader industry shift from debating whether AI music should be licensed to developing the systems that could make authorization, attribution and payment operational at scale.

However, owning or licensing patents does not automatically guarantee creator consent or fair compensation. The framework’s significance will depend on the licence terms, its implementation within individual platforms and whether it attracts wider adoption.

If more AI companies and rightsholders participate, Music IP Holdings could establish an important infrastructure layer connecting generative music tools with licensed catalogues. For now, Udio and GRAI provide its first real-world test.
