Designers’ collections for male footwear have successfully overcome the often repeated stereotype about the unchanging nature of men’s fashion.

The trends of the coming season encourage a more imaginative outlook than in previous years.

Shoe ideas for Autumn 2012 have been put together with plenty of interesting approaches for male boots, trainers and shoes without compromising on masculinity and retailers have, without doubt, picked up on these trends.

Across all the main product ranges of footwear the main theme is based around colour. Browns, with hues ranging from light sand through to deep chocolate, are the order of the day.

A quick glimpse of the number of brown shoes available on the high street, compared with last year, tells its own story.

Marks and Spencer have a light brown brogue with a layered sole in their Autograph range which is likely to do well.

And they have backed this up with a higher end welted brown brogue product which is ‘Saville Row’ inspired.

Dr Marten’s Ethan shoe offers a natural aniline dyed leather upper in a dark brown waxy finish, which is likely to appeal to younger men.

Of course, there are plenty of black shoes still on sale.

They remain ever popular, year on year. Undeniably, however, the trend for browns appears set and will remain so for well into the winter.

When it comes to boots, most of the manufacturers are pushing browns too, complimented by lapels in faux fur or knitted fabrics, which have been mainstays of women’s boots for years.

D&G and Timberland both have high ankle boots, in brown, with faux fur finishes on the market.

Mixing and matching differing textures on the upper part of a male boot seems to be very much the vogue.

In terms of trainers, brown is again the autumnal trend most retailers have picked up on.

Dark browns with a light trim can be seen on a product like Adidas Originals Milano and the reverse colour scheme has been used by Diadora with their Queen 70 training shoes.

Hybrid footwear, such as Clarks Mid Traxter range of sports shoe, is again consistent with the trend for browns, albeit in their case with a light coloured sole.

Trainers with bright reds, greens and yellows, that scream the arrival of summer, may well serve again next year.

For now, however, it is time to feel the autumn chill and go brown.
