Worthy winners The XX talk about what it means to win the Barclaycard Mercury Prize Album of the Year award.
The three-piece group from south London looked shocked as host Jools Holland announced that they were the winners, beating off music heavyweights such as Paul Weller, Dizzee Rascal and Biffy Clyro to the post.

Bassist Oliver Sim said: “It’s hard to remove yourself and understand why they chose us. We thought LAURA MARLING or WILD BEASTS would take it. But we are pleased. We will now all get our own places.”

Singer Romy Madley Croft, who met Oliver when they were three, added: “We made this album in a converted garage but we would like to build our own studio now.”

Simon Frith, Chair of Judges commented, “The xx have a unique sense of time and space – urban and enigmatic. The result is a wonderfully atmospheric album – sparse, urgent, hypnotic and powerful”.
