Tarn PK is a producer, artist, and songwriter from Wellington, New Zealand. Tarn has released two lush stripped-back EPs – ‘Fantasy’ (in 2019) and ‘Monarch’ (in 2021). His new EP explores some different sonic possibilities and an overall more bombastic and upfront sound, so Simple Love works as the ideal introduction to his freshly complex yet fetching Hyper Pop-inspired sound.

Tarn PK explains: “At first Simple Love wasn’t a song that I wanted to release myself. Because it felt more personal than my previous songs, there was a feeling of deflection by giving it to someone else. However, it didn’t work out and the song remained in the back of my head.

In early 2022 I was starting a new project with a more eccentric production direction, and I decided to give Simple Love a facelift and see if it could fit in with these new sonics. It instantly clicked.

Moving it from a smooth RnB jam to a Hyper Pop-inspired weird little song just felt like the perfect counteraction to the more traditional songwriting style. The song mashes together a lot of influences, to name a few – underscores, The Neptunes, and Roy Blair.

Where do you think your music fits in today’s world?

I definitely have an idea of where I’d like to fit in. I’m not sure if that’s where I am yet but hopefully moving closer to it. I think in general it’s pop music that has an edge and incorporates more alternative ideas, structures and instruments.

If you were stranded on a desert island which three albums would you choose to wash up on the shore?

I feel like I’d like to have Bob Marley’s Legend’, not necessarily cause it’s my favorite album but I think it would be a nice vibe for the island. Other albums would probably be ‘Blonde’ and ‘Abbey Road’. Some very basic picks but they’re ones I can always come back to and get enjoyment.

What are your plans for the rest of this year?

Just really enjoying working with other artists on their own music and developing my production skills. It’s such a great way to get out of your own head and try things you wouldn’t normally. Otherwise, I’d like to be completing my current project and I’m already pondering some ideas for what’s to come after that!

Dream line up. If you could tour with any musicians, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

I’ll give you one of each, I’d love to tour with Bon Iver he’s one of my favorites of all time, something about the rawness of his voice just hits me differently. Dead, it would’ve been amazing to play in the same lineup as Nick Drake.

If you had to describe your sound in three words what would they be?

My sound is definitely in a state of upheaval and changes all the time. Currently, I would say; electric, bombastic, and playful.

What do you want people to take away from listening to your music?

Ideally, I would like people just to enjoy listening to my songs. Above that, I don’t have too many hopes, if it can give them a buzz that’s a wee extra bonus.
