Belfast born star Stephen Rea is to appear in a new Channel 4 drama later this month. The actor, best known for his roles in Hollywood movies such as V For Vendetta, The Crying Game and Citizen X will play a supporting role in the programme.

The six-part thriller follows a group of people who find themselves in possession of a manuscript of a cult graphic novel.

According to Channel 4 the drama is “intriguing” and “risky”. In the show the graphic novel “predicts disasters and brings dreadful trouble to all those who come in contact with it.

A Channel 4 spokeswoman added: “The group soon find themselves targeted by a shadowy organisation known only as The Network.”

Utopia, written by Dennis Kelly, co-writer of the West End hit Matilda, also stars actors Nathan Stewart-Jarrett, James Fox, Alexandra Roach, Wilson Adeel Akhtar, Paul Higgins and Geraldine James.

Dennis said the essence of the show was “a conspiracy hidden inside a graphic novel”.
He added: “I think the conspiracy was quite ‘illuminati’.

“Basically there’s a graphic novel that’s been published in the past, and there have been lots of whacked-out conspiracy theories linked to it.

“There are people who are fans of it, who suddenly get involved in this conspiracy, and as things slowly begin to unravel, they get thrown out of their lives. They can’t contact their families or use email, and are constantly on the run.”

Utopia airs every Tuesday for six weeks at 10pm on Channel 4 starting January 15.
