STELLA: ‘I BELIEVE THERE IS STRENGTH IN VULNERABILITY’

STELLASan Francisco born, intriguing and utterly talented, singer /songwriter STELLA, opens up to FM about: the idea behind her debut album ‘Selfish, the enigmatically alluring new track ‘New Toy’, her father Latin legend Carlos Santana!, her favorite artist Lauryn Hill and vulnerability…

‘New Toy’, produced by Jared Evan, is lifted from from her debut album ‘Selfish’. ICYMI here’s ‘Fumes’ (prod. by Frankie P),

Nice to meet Stella :-)…Can you talk about your new track ‘New Toy’

Nice to meet you too!! I wrote new toy kind of picturing myself on a shelf in packaging and guys walking by, getting excited about the idea of having me. They weren’t seeing me as a person but as an object, to try out until it wasn’t “fun” anymore and/or something “better” came along. I kept picturing the nsync video for it’s gonna be me, where they were all dressed up as toys…

What’s the idea behind your debut album ‘Selfish.’

This project is the first time I actually decided to drop everything else I was doing for anybody else and really just get down to business with myself. I highly recommend it. We are capable of great things when we are focused. And I’ve received feedback in my life that I can be selfish, like it was a bad thing. But I took it as a compliment 🙂 stella3 What were your influences whilst writing it?

My influences are always my own personal experience. As soon as I start to feel emotional about something I write about it. It helps me personally but also I know I’m not the only one going through this probably. Sure, the details might be different for others but I try to write so that maybe I can help someone else who might be struggling too.

What has been the hardest part of being in the music industry for you?

Building a team is hard but fun! You really have to know what you want, where you’re going (or at least where you wanna go) and be super clear to call in the people you need. It’s a challenge and I love a challenge.

What’s the best and worst thing about being the daughter of Latin legend Carlos Santana?

Haha worst thing is this question! No there are no bad things 🙂 this is the only life I know so it’s difficult to compare but I love my family and feel very grateful and blessed. stella2How did you start and when?

I started in a very cliche way after a break up around 2013. I used the experience to fuel my writing. The sadder I was the more I wrote. I knew I wasn’t gonna be sad forever so I didn’t wanna waste it. I Let myself feel everything so I could try to be as vulnerable as possible cuz I believe there is strength in vulnerability.

Who are your musical and non-musical influences?

Lauryn hill has always been my favorite artist so I’d say I’m very influenced by her sound. I’m just really drawn to Melody… Even though I write, when I listen to music I rarely listen to lyrics unless I really focus. If the melody makes me wanna sing, I’m hooked. It’s as simple as that.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I listen to everything really… Except country.

Are you planning any live shows and what will they be like?

Heading to London as I type this for a gig at The Old Blue Last on Feb 24. It’s me and my band and I don’t change outfits or have dancers or any pyrotechnics…Just me and the music. Very chill vibe 🙂
