Sovereigns. Channeling the ethereal with ‘Ghost’

"In essence it’s a song about being with somebody who is fading away from the person you were attracted to when you met"

Amidst the bustling music scene of London and Essex, the alternative rock band Sovereigns is making waves with the unveiling of their latest EP, Paranormal Activity, complemented by the release of their thrilling new single, Ghost. Renowned for their dynamic live shows and an innovative mix of indie-rock with pop-punk, Sovereigns has established a distinct presence that appeals to both audiences and critics, securing recognition on esteemed platforms like BBC Introducing and Radio X.

Ghost, the lead single from their next EP, showcases The Sovereigns’ signature sound: engaging melodies set to a lively guitar backdrop. It blends relatable lyrics with intricate music, starting softly and rising to a distortion-heavy chorus. The track reaches a powerful climax, marked by a pitch-altered, whammy pedal guitar solo, and concludes with a chorus designed to resonate through stadiums.

Delving into the essence of Ghost, the band shares, “Ghost is not about going into a creepy house and thinking you have seen something or creating an image of a cheesy 2000s American horror film… In essence it’s a song about being with somebody who is fading away from the person you were attracted to when you met. There are moments when a relationship or a friendship comes to an end you get nostalgic about how things used to be and that’s what we have tried to encapsulate within this song. The song is written from a first person perspective and follows the theme of rocky relationships with the peaks and troughs within the song. The upcoming EP ‘Paranormal activity’ and the songs that fall under all are based on the stranger things that life has to offer – Ghost sets the precedent for the rest of the EP.”

Influenced by bands such as Blink 182, The Libertines, and Smashing Pumpkins, since their formation in 2021, Sovereigns have quickly made a name for themselves with their energetic performances and DIY approach.

Despite their relatively short time on the scene, Sovereigns have already made significant strides, including a sold-out gig at Camden’s The Dublin Castle, national radio exposure, and a coveted invitation to record at Abbey Road following a performance at London’s 100 Club. The release of Ghost not only cements their rising status but also offers fans a tantalizing glimpse into the thematic depth and musical evolution awaiting in Paranormal Activity.
