SOCAN has announced a collaboration with Canadian rights technology company Musical AI to explore new attribution, consent and reporting infrastructure for generative music.
The partnership will examine how Musical AI’s technology could help identify when existing compositions and sound recordings influence AI-generated outputs, creating reporting that may support licensing, accountability and creator compensation.
SOCAN will also recognise Musical AI as an approved technology partner for attribution services and related initiatives.
The collaboration is built around two core principles: music creators should be able to decide whether their work participates in AI systems, and creators should receive credit and remuneration when their work contributes to an AI-generated result.
Musical AI’s technology assesses influence across both sound recording and composition rights, while its consent management tools are designed to give artists, songwriters and rights holders a clearer way to opt into approved AI uses.
As AI reshapes the music industry, music creators must have transparency, credit and fair compensation. This collaboration with Musical AI establishes a foundation for attribution and compensation, to ensure that music creators are paid when their music is used by AI. – SOCAN CEO Jennifer Brown
Musical AI CEO Sean Power adds:
The first step is consent. The next step is attribution that can show how music contributes to an output and how value should flow to artists and songwriters.
The collaboration remains exploratory, but it signals a shift toward practical AI music rights infrastructure.
For FM PRO TECH, the test is whether consent, attribution and compensation can work across compositions, recordings and platforms.
