SCARLETT RABE ‘BATTLE CRY’: ‘THERE ARE NO LINES FOR ME, NO BOUNDARIES, NO CONTEXT’

Scarlett Rabe1Scarlett Rabe’s ‘Battle Cry’ was overwhelmingly selected by fans as their favorite video during last week’s round of mtvU’s The Freshmen. Los Angeles based singer/songwriter Scarlett Rabe, was forbidden as a child from participating in popular culture…

Her splendid new single ‘Battle Cry’ (out now), is an anthem that features lyrics of female empowerment and endurance. Scarlett says: “The song is very emotional and powerful for me. It’s the first time I could say the things I said with that kind of conviction.”

They say I’m young and that I’m foolish
Sometimes it’s hard to fall in line
So much to lose and that I’m careless
But all your rules just don’t apply

Cuz you’re the ocean I’m Amelia Aerhart
You’re the fire then I’m Joan of Arc
My life is like a work of art
And I’m gonna leave a mark

And I’m not afraid
And I’m not ashamed
No I’m not the same as the rest
As the rest
Don’t need no medal on my chest
I’ll fight like hell till nothing’s left
And my last words on my last breath will be
I’m not sorry I’m not sorryScarlett Rabe2If you dare to dream they call it reckless
They’ll tell you where to draw the line
But what you can be is truly endless
When all their rules just don’t apply

Cuz you’re the ocean I’m Amelia Aerhart
You’re the fire then I’m Joan of Arc
My life is like a work of art
And I’m gonna leave a mark

And I’m not afraid
And I’m not ashamed
No I’m not the same as the rest
As the rest
Don’t need no medal on my chest
I’ll fight like hell till nothing’s left
And my last words on my last breath will be
I’m not sorry I’m not sorryScarlett Rabe3Hear my battle cry
I’m not sorry I’m not sorry
Hear my battle cry
I’m not sorry I’m not sorry

Louder than fame
Shouting my name
I’m not the same as the rest

And I’m not afraid
And I’m not ashamed
No I’m not the same as the rest
As the rest
Don’t need no medal on my chest
I’ll fight like hell till nothing’s left
And my last words on my last breath will be
I’m not sorry I’m not sorry

I’m not I’m not
No I’m not like the rest
Like the rest

Hear my battle cry
I’m not sorry I’m not sorry
Hear my battle cry
I’m not sorry I’m not sorry

Scarlett’s parents did not allow her to watch television or listen to the radio. Instead, they preached the classical arts. Scarlett revealed to American Songwriter: “There are a lot of social and cultural cues that we absorb through music and pop culture – some subliminally and some very consciously. Those were never there for me, which always made me feel a bit of a void.

I’d say the most dramatic shaping happened as I started to experience everything at once. I ingested music voraciously and as comprehensively as I could, and I still do…There are no lines for me, no boundaries, no context – just the songs and the music for what they are.”
