Park Days unveils ‘Waiting Around’: A fresh solo venture

"I wrote it about that feeling of being ready for your big break to come in life but it’s not happening so you feel you’re treading water until that moment but at the same time wanting to be proactive to change your situation."

In discussions of indie music, fresh sounds and innovative artists consistently captivate audiences who crave authenticity and originality. Among these emerging talents stands Sam Thrussell, primarily known for his role in the Brighton-based band Dutch Criminal Record. Now, Thrussell embarks on an exciting solo side-project, Park Days, releasing the eagerly awaited debut EP, Waiting Around.

This debut EP perfectly showcases his exceptional talents, not only as a songwriter but also in creating distinctive indie soundscapes.

Thrussell’s artistic vision for the engaging four-track EP is realized through shimmering, guitar-led arrangements, complemented by his understated yet infectious lead vocals, and characterized by a distinctive, boxy, and distorted production style. The music captures an essence reminiscent of The Strokes’ seminal album ‘Is This It?’, while maintaining a vibrant freshness through honest, reflective lyricism and the intricate interplay of bass and guitar.

“The whole EP has been a long time in the making and all the songs come from a similar sonic mindset of trying to recreate 00’s indie so they all fit together despite being written at different times. Waiting Around I think was composed in 2018 and never fitted into anything I was doing with DCR but really feels at home with the other songs on the EP.

I wrote it about that feeling of being ready for your big break to come in life but it’s not happening so you feel you’re treading water until that moment but at the same time wanting to be proactive to change your situation. In that sense I called the EP ‘Waiting Around’ because it’s my attempt to not just wait for life to happen but to go out and get it! Musically there’s a nod to The Strokes in some of the chord voicings and vocal sound but like the others songs on the EP but there’s some nice backing vocals too (which is my ever present nod to The Beach Boys)!

The other new track New Year was written on 4th January 2020 and lyrically is me wondering aloud about what the year has in store. It’s particularly ironic considering what happened in 2020. I like how it’s really short and succinct and has some quite intricate interweaving guitar lines.”

The title track and lead single Waiting Around exemplifies this balance, offering catchy rhythms while maintaining an effortlessly cool indie edge. This balance is not accidental but a reflection of Thrussell’s deep engagement with the genre’s roots and his desire to bring something new to the table.

The narrative of Waiting Around resonates with the universal feeling of anticipation for life’s big breaks, blending a sense of longing with the proactive drive to change one’s circumstances. This duality is encapsulated in the EP’s title, symbolizing Thrussell’s refusal to passively wait for life’s opportunities.

With an established track record of success within Dutch Criminal Record, including sold-out tours across the UK and Europe and significant media and streaming platform support, Sam Thrussell’s solo venture, Park Days, cements his status as a noteworthy artist in his own right.
