"We wanted to show the need of coherence in the chaos, and the AI was the best ally to achieve this special goal."

By Vee D

Sagans collective added Blade Runner-inspired aesthetics and scenery to their video for their latest single, ‘Coherence’. The group of artists and graphic designers create stunning music-video syncs using AI software. The video was created using artificial intelligence technology, namely Open AI GPT-3 and Codex.

What was the first album you bought?

“Kid A” by Radiohead. This album has been kind of a supernova in my brain. I understood for the first time that popular artists could do something interesting and unique while remaining accessible artists.

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?

One of my biggest inspirations is Lorn. He can do something so dark and at the same time so powerful that it gives you the necessary motivation to overcome all obstacles in life. Aside from that, I guess there is Caribou, CRi, Photay, Darkside, Thom Yorke, Rival Consoles.

What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?

Japanese animation is very important to me, Akira, Ghost in the shell… Also Japanese videogames – some old Final Fantasy games from my childhood, Ico, … When I’m creating some music, I always need to visualise something, to tell a story, to explain why I’m feeling this weird emotion right now. All images that come to my mind are related to those and that’s the reason why video is so important in our project.

Tell us about the video for your new single ‘Coherence’?

The video has been fully made by AI algorithms. The result is something very weird, very intense, but also very emotional and paradoxically also very human. We wanted to work with the machine to go very deep into the process. When we composed the music, we were having those images in mind of this infinite city where you get lost, trying to find a sense to your everyday life with so many people around you living the exact same thing as you. This endless search for meaning in an endless city. We wanted to show the need of coherence in the chaos, and the AI was the best ally to achieve this special goal.

What are you planning on doing in 2022?

There is a lot to expect from this project in 2022: we are exploring new music fields based on recent music AI algorithms. We are also already working on several music videos for interesting projects, pushing the boundaries of what we have started with “Coherence”. Please stay tuned, 2022 will definitely be an exciting year!
