Vienna-based trio RAENNER is an up-and-coming alt-rock-pop group in the process of delivering a powerful and dynamic debut EP Break Here With You. After two years of striving to find their signature sound, their effort seems to have culminated in a cathartic and compelling offering. So far they have released five of the seven songs on the EP.

Describing themselves as “a lost cause with a grand vision”, the group of songwriters originates from a heavy rock background and presents RAENNER as an intriguing modern pop project featuring elements of underground rock and punk in combination with trap beats and electronic sounds. The band names their musical guiding principle as the phrase “urban melancholy”, which aptly describes the feel created the combination of the genre blend, the dark and moody sound and powerfully emotive vocals.

The opening track Break Here With You is a quick-paced, ethereal song that leans into emo rock with its raw expression, and also features just a hint of hip-hop, doing a good job at setting the tone for the rest of the EP. The following title track, Heal Me, explores a sense of hopelessness and helplessnes with a big, reverberating sound and memorable chorus refrain that bursts open atop layers of a melancholy electronic soundscape. Track three, Fix This, features a raucous, emotive chorus that follows a more subdued and faster-paced verse and features buzzsaw guitar lines cutting through a jungle of synth. Let’s Talk maintains the level of explosive angst even further, before finally, The South Up North takes things down a notch with some acoustic guitar lines, sparser drums and mellower though still sorrowful vocals that lament “picking up the pieces just to make it through the night“.
