FAME had a chat with Philip:

WHAT’S THE MOST SUCCESSFUL THING YOU GUYS HAVE DONE TO DATE ?
Oh… All of it! I feel successful if I’m able to create from an honest place and get my sound and message focused enough for people to digest it, and hopefully inspire people to do what they love. There’s been a great deal of hi-lights, and I look forward to many more!

WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST GET TO WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?
My network of family and friends. They’re the ones who love me unconditionally. These are the same people who will tell me if you’re being an asshole or I’m disconnected. I’ve been in situations where it’s like “the emperor’s new clothes”. This fakery is not good for anyone who’s interested in growing.
WHAT’S COMING NEXT FOR YOU?
We’ve got a UK tour staring in Manchester this Sunday, November 7th. We’ll be in The UK for almost 2 weeks, and we couldn’t be more excited! My bass player Joel Gottschalk is a ferocious player, and a wonderful guy, and joining us on drums for this tour is our friend, the amazing Fritz Lewak, who plays with Jackson Browne, Melissa Etheridge, Sugarland, etc. It’s going to be an amazing time!

IS IT HARD BEING A NEW ARTIST IN TODAY’S INDUSTRY?
This is an incredible time to be an emerging artist. The way things are shifting, it’s imperative that an artist is actually really good at what they do in order to have a career. Every year or two, a new social media site catches on like wildfire and exponentially increases ways to reach your existing and future awaiting audience. The old model of the record business is fading out, and in ten years may not even exist. The bottom line is, get really really good at what you do, get out there and play live, and write & record your truth, and it will resonate with people. This is a GREAT time to be breaking through!!

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL NETWORK SITES FOR YOUR SUCCESS?
These sites are imperative! They are instant communication with my fanbase and instant information for someone who may be discovering my music for the first time. The key is fresh content and activity. You don’t have to be a professional comedian, but keeping it fresh and letting my personality come through is important. It helps me feel connected with people, and hopefully vice versa. On this upcoming tour, we’ll be uploading videos and updates daily via Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, etc. We’re also using these sites to let people know about our tour and where we’ll be hangin after the shows.

WHO WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO COLLABORATE WITH IN THE INDUSTRY?
Oh, so many! I would love to collaborate with Eric Clapton. He’s always been one of my greatest inspirations and to me, he is an example of someone who really shines in the moment. He always knows the right notes to hit and it never feels like a cerebral exercise. His art is honest. Stevie Wonder, because he’s Stevie Wonder! Dave Grohl, James Morrison, Jack White, Lenny Kravitz, Paul McCartney…Anyone who really is truthful in their art.
