London-based, stunning and talented pop songstress, Nina Schofield, talks ‘Imaginary Love’, her pop gem included in OMC2 | ONE MORE COMPILATION VOL. 2, out now via OML.
‘Imaginary Love’ is the latest single taken from my album SHAPES – says Nina – It’s about a sociopath I had the misfortune of crossing paths with but I wrote the music so it would be uplifting and make the most out of a bad situation!
What were your influences and vibes whilst writing it?
Lyrically – the sociopath!! I actually wrote the melody in a dream which sounds really cliché but its true! I think I was so disturbed by happenings in my life at that time that the music made its way into my dream and I woke myself up to quickly record it. My producer Jo Pereira managed to turn it into something really vibey with pop and electronic tones.
How did you start?
It’s just little old me – I knew from a very young age I wanted to perform and I just happened to enjoy being a solo performer, so that’s what I’ve continued doing ever since.
Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration?
Lyrically; mostly from things that are happening to me directly, but sometimes from stories I hear from friends or things I see happening on the news. Musically I can get inspired to write anytime I hear a piece of music that hits me in the gut!! What is your usual songwriting process?
It depends on who I am writing for – when I write for other artists I sometimes have a track that I put melody and words on top of – that is a case of improvising catchy tunes and lyrics until finding the ones that fit. When I’m writing for myself I often either sit at my piano or I have a melody already in my head that’s been swimming around for a few days. Then I just have to find the right chords and lyrics!
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Imogen Heap. She’s unbelievably creative and her albums are always playing on my iphone. I’d be really interested to see what we could come up with.
Are you planning any live shows and what will they be like?
I will be going back on tour with the Sons of Pitches in November playing some acoustic shows with me on piano and also with a guitarist. I also cant wait to get back out there with my band and play some big electric shows with my new album!
