nikki-w116 year-old Canadian artist Nikki describes her music as “pop music with cuts, tattoos, and honesty.” She speaks on behalf of “gypsies, wallflowers, and those without a voice” about love, doubt, sex, self-harm, and alienation…’.

Her impressive and mature debut single ‘Transparent Hands’, taken from her full length EP ‘Sad Generation’ (produced by Gavin Brow), feature on ONE MORE COMPILATION VOL.1 – out now on iTunes, Amazon and Spotify – the fruit of our collaboration with Italian independent label ONE MORE LAB (

Her songwriting is strong, with lyrics like this: “Don’t know who to trust and who to doubt” and “Someone like you is much too wonderful, lovely for someone as sad as me,” she voices her generation’s anxiety with honesty and poignancy…

When did you start and what inspired you to write music?

I wrote my first song when I was about 10, my dad was a musician so he always wanted me to write as well. I was at first inspired by love and relationships but then as I started to get older, my interests grew also. Now I write about things like how i’m feeling, heartbreak, sex, sadness, and my friends and family. I started out writing just for myself, but now I’m trying to find a balance between writing just for myself and helping others or inspiring them.nikki w sad generation2Can you talk a bit about your track ‘Transparent Hands’?

I wrote transparent hands almost a year ago, it was one of the last songs to be written for the album. I really love this song, I think it tells the story of not knowing who you are and finding love for the first time. I wrote this song about someone I cared for very deeply, the song means a lot to me and I hope the feelings can translate to other people as well!

What were your influences whilst writing the track?

I was listening to a lot of Metric when I wrote this song, which is kind of ironic because my producer also works with them! I was also reading a lot of poetry and books, so I had words and phrases tucked away in my brain for lyrics. nikki w2Tell us about your next show and why we should be there

My next show is at the Drake Underground in Toronto, Canada. You should be there because my band and I all love what we’re doing and it really translates to a fun atmosphere for the audience. All of the songs are very personal to me, so it’s an emotional show with intense instrumentation. And you can come over and talk to me and I’ll give you a free CD, haha.

What kind of music do you listen to?

I listen to a mostly alternative music and rap. My favourite band is called alt-J, they just have the coolest tones and grooviest beats. I also really love Kendrick Lamar, he’s an amazing new rapper. Some of my other favourites are Lana Del Rey, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Edward Sharpe and the magnetic zeros, and this band Daughter.nikki w sad generationWhat’s coming next for you?

I want to get back to writing so I can have a full length ready in 2015! Gigging lots and just to keep getting better.
