Illinois-based drum and guitar duo Murnau answer some QuickFire Questions as they share with us the official music video for their single ‘Baltic Sea‘. The pair describes themselves aptly as “a consolidation of The Cure, Smashing Pumpkins, Katatonia, Leonard Cohen, Opeth, Neurosis, Nirvana, [and] Placebo” among others.

On the conception of ‘Baltic SeaMurnau shared: “This song came together much quicker than the usual Murnau track. Alex wrote a couple of the initial riffs and quickly sent rough recordings to Nick so he could start thinking about the drums. A couple days later, the full structure with lyrics came together. Alex sent Nick an updated recording and the next week we had a final recording ready to go to mixing. It’s one of those songs that just flows and feels right from the start, which, is rare for us as many of our songs take time to develop and feel happy with the final product.”

How did your band form? And how did you come up with the name?

The two of us have known each other since grade school and started bands together as early as Junior High. After many bands and projects with other members, Murnau has been a constant for the last 15+ years. The name comes from the director FW Murnau as we feel the atmosphere of his films mimics what we are trying to do with our music.

Does the city you inhabit influence the music you produce?

I believe it does, but hard to put into specifics. We grew up in a small town in the Midwest with a small but active music scene. That creates a different type of influence and topics to represent in our music versus growing up in large cities where you are 1 of 1,000s of bands and have a completely different environment of what you see going on around you.

Where do you think your music fits in today’s world?

We don’t music to sound or be a part of any specific genre. It’s whatever comes to us and feels right. And being a duo, the songs represent just the two of us. There will always be music fans looking for something authentic like that.

If you could open a show for any artist who would it be?

Placebo.

What do you find is the most rewarding part of what you do?

Seeing fans connect to our music. Every Spotify stream, merchandise purchase or person in the audience at a live show is appreciated beyond words. I’m always humbled that someone enjoys what we do.
