We’ve been big fans of singer-songwriter Melissa Bel for a while now and it seems she’s constantly expanding and updating her sound and we’re so here for it. Her latest single Sunshine combines country, blues and soul-tinged sensibilities and its packed with an emotional punch, so watch out.
When we first featured Melissa way back in 2016, she was creating infectious pop beats akin to the likes of Meghan Trainor and Taylor Swift.
Now, it seems she’s broken into folk world; an impressively bold transition that certainly seems to be paying off. Sunshine feels instantly reminiscent of the likes of Lake Street Dive and The Teskey Brother, but with Melissa’s signature soul-tinged vocals still very much at the forefront and for which we are very grateful.
Talking about the single, Melissa explains, “I wrote this song on my first – and so far only – trip to Nashville. I’d had that opening melody floating around in my head and when I sang it Kris and I knew we were going to write something soulful and sad, all about feel, less about hooks or structure. From there we ended up painting this picture of what it feels like to be let down by someone you really had high hopes for. Someone who had promised you better.”
Sunshine was co-written by Kris Bergsnes (Tim McGraw, Wynonna Judd) and produced by Joseph Cross (Lana Del Rey, La Roux).
