MEIYI QuickFire Questions

Singapore born, London-based singer-songwriter MEIYI presents her debut track called Honest

What was the first album you bought?

One of the first was Corrine Bailee Rae’s debut album. Couldn’t get enough of her breezy soul tracks.

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?

Leif Vollebekk for his song-writing. Vollebekk charges little moments with an incredible weight and emotion – talk about song goals. Sylvan Esso for making simple electric beats bounce with surprising and addictive vocals. Also, Erykah Badu for pretty much killing it.

What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?

Whatever I’m reading. The latest book has been Mythos and there’s enough madness for an album right there. Conversations – usually those in transit. I’ve written a lot of songs on busses, apparently I find them very inspiring. I’m always motivated by friends who are doing something creative and loving it. There’s a music to people exploring their instinct.

Tell us about your new single for Honest?

Falling for someone can change everything you know about yourself. Honest speaks to that beautiful and terrible truth. If you’ve ever felt annoyed about falling in love, this song is for you.

What can we expect from you in 2020?

Expect new solo and collaborative releases. Lockdown has left me with a lot of free time and musical purchases. Who knows what will happen.
