Hey Soumik Datta! How are you doing today?

It’s Monday so gearing up mentaly and physically to start a new week in lockdown.

What’s your new single Tiger Tiger all about?

Tiger Tiger is my new single, made in response to the forest fires we’ve seen in Australia and the Amazon. I was very moved by the images of the trees burning and the the impact of these fires on animal and wildlife. The single is a continuation of my previous EP, Jangal, which was also made in response to similar themes – deforestation and the climate change crisis, which I have been following. As an artist I’m trying to find musical responses to critical issues that I feel we need to be addressing. At the core of my new single is a celebration of nature, biodiversity and a reminder that life on this wonderful planet of ours needs to be kept in balance.

Describe your sound in five words:

organic, pulsing, strings, roots, cinematic

If you could collaborate with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be?

Miles Davis, A R Rahman, Hans Zimmer, Radiohead, Sigur Ros

What are you doing to keep yourself entertained during lock down?

I’ve found a routine that works for me. Its a mix of productivity and relaxation, composing time, a home workout, admin and zoom calls and a very clear cut off point at 7pm when I open a bar of dark chocolate, turn on my old vinyl player and unwind by cooking dinner from scratch.

What is your songwriting process like?

Once I know why I’m making the song, it usually takes me a day or two to clarify the core melody/ rhythm. Beyond that it can take weeks or even months to polish, produce and mix until I’m happy with the finished work.

You’ve worked with some amazing artists in the past (Beyonce!) – how did that come about?

I’m lucky to have been at the right place at the right time with the right people supporting me. I’m deeply thankful to the universe for these opportunities.

Who are your biggest influences?

Indian classical music is deeply connected with nature and the changing seasons. I’m very influenced by ancient ragas, intricate rhythms and also the folk music of India. Beyond that I love producing in the studio and I suppose my style is influenced by artists I admire: Radiohead, Mogwai, Boards of Canada, Nitin Sawhney.

What’s the first thing you’re gonna do post-lock down?

Take a flight to an island in the middle of the ocean and swim!
