Last month we were introduced to the second breezy release of budding Norwegian artist Marie Noreger, Soulfully High – a track that gently meanders through enchanting instrumentation and the tender tones of Marie. Upon the release of her music video, we were keen to speak to Marie to find out more about the story behind the track, her creative processes and what inspires her music…
We love your single Soulfully High, what was the inspiration behind the track?
Thank you, that is so nice to hear! The inspiration behind Soulfully high is the relationship you have with yourself. The inner conversations, the questions you ask and the answers you receive.
Are there any certain creative processes you follow when making music?
I love coming to the studio with a certain feeling and having that as the only idea. I work quite spontaneously, but I always have a strong intuition for where I want to go.
How do you decide your visuals to go with your music?
I don’t know… well I make visuals out of a specific feeling and I do the same with music. I think I just match the feels together.
Who are your main musical influences and why?
So much inspires me! There is no one specific but I love digging into old classics and genres to new artists and waves! I listen to A LOT of different artist and they all inspire me in some kind of way. These days I’m listening to Jill Scott and Erykah Badu, James Blake and Frank Ocean – It´s just the way they float with the sound that draws me, their voice really feel like an instrument and it makes me travel.
You’re based in Norway, what is the music scene like over there? How does it compare to the UK?
Coming from the music I make I think the audience is bigger in the UK, I think it has potential here, but maybe UK is more open to the “underground” sound.
When did you know you wanted to go into music?
I’ve always had a big heart for music. Since I was very young I knew that I was going to do something creative with my life… but to be honest I wasn’t sure it was going to be music. When having a lot of passions, it can be difficult to make sense out of it, It feels like you have to choose one path and that can be so confusing. When I started the project, it all made sense to me though, it felt like I was finally walking on two legs. Everything I love to do melted together.
What’s in store for the rest of the year for Marie Noreger?
I’ve been in the studio a lot this year and I can’t wait to drop my first EP Soulfully High coming up early 2021!
