Meet Kidsmoke

Hey Kidsmoke! How are you today?

Hello FM magazine! Yeah we’re good thanks, hope you are too.

Please introduce yourselves to our readers:

We are Kidsmoke, made up of Lance (Lead Vocals and Guitar), James (Bass and Vocals), Sophie (Lead Guitar and Vocals) and Ash (Drums). We’re from Wrexham in North Wales and we love making moody indie-pop music.

What is your new single She Takes You Under all about?

She Takes You Under is a dream-pop mini-epic and has been a live favourite of ours for a while now as it’s so much fun to play. It’s influenced heavily by our favourite 80s bands (The Cure, Prefab Sprout, The Go Betweens) which you can hear in the jangly guitars, synths and rhythms. Lyrically, the song is about dealing with your demons in order to move forward; being at odds with yourself about facing your demons, but feeling reluctant to go back down the rabbit hole.

Who would you say are your biggest influences?

We are all completely obsessed with music and therefore are influenced by all kinds of artists – hopefully you can hear that in our sound. Crafting a song is something that’s really important to us – we’re always trying to do the best to write song that we’d find interesting as an outsider. With that in mind we’d say that we’re hugely influenced by songwriting greats such as The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Kate Bush and David Bowie.

What’s been your favourite city to perform live in so far?

There have been so many amazing places it’d be impossible to just pick one – a recent highlight though would be playing in Edinburgh for Wide Days Festival. It was our first time playing in Scotland and we had a really great time.

You played SXSW and The Great Escape earlier this year – how was that?

They were both amazing experiences – obviously SXSW was absolutely crazy as we played so many gigs in the time we were there, but we met a lot of great people and watched some incredible bands too. The Great Escape was our first time playing in Brighton and we played to a packed-out room at the BBC Horizons showcase – it was sunny too, we couldn’t have asked for more!

How did you end up getting a sync feature on Black Mirror?! That’s awesome!

So that came about through Sentric Music who we often partner with for publishing and sync. It was the first major sync opportunity we’d had and we just couldn’t believe it – Black Mirror is such a huge show now and we’re all genuine fans, so to be part of that was a dream come true for us. We had to keep it a secret for ages though, which was really hard because we were all so excited about it.

What’s the music scene like in Wrexham? Any artists you can recommend?

There are a lot of amazing bands from Wrexham and the arts community is strong for such a small place. One huge plus is that Wrexham is home to FOCUS Wales music festival and conference which takes place every year in the town. We feel super proud to have FOCUS on our doorstep, they’re doing such great work with putting Welsh music on the map and it just keeps getting bigger and better. We’d recommend checking out our pals Denuo, Seazoo, Ennio The Little Brother and Baby Brave.

What are your plans for the rest of 2019?

We’re just putting the final touches to our debut album, so we’ll be announcing release details for that soon. We’ve been working on it for the last 12 months and are super excited to share it with you all.

Where can we find you online?

Everywhere! We’re on all the usual platforms. If you head to our main website you can find everything from there:
