London artist Meelo presents his new electronic / RnB gem called ‘Reflets’, lifted from his debut EP ‘Movement 1’ due this April.
Meelo explains: “My music explores a deep commitment to the values of introspection, self-discovery and healing. We’ve all felt that strange mix of thrill and fear when we’re on the cusp of making a breakthrough, fearing it precisely because it is still in the unknown. Reflet dives into that feeling with a mix of shimmer and depth, unrelenting rhythm.”

Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?
Literally, any artist that is bold enough and liberated enough to break ground, anyone that puts true emotion into it, the ones that act freely and make exactly what they want, these people showed me that music is nothing but a powerful tool that can fit any shape you want it to; Joni Mitchell, Weather Report (esp. Jaco Pastorius), Thom Yorke, Igor Stravinsky (his ballet Petrushka wow), the bossa-nova pioneers like Carlos Antonio Jobim, the dub-reggae visionaries King Tubby and Musical Youth, THE IMPRESSIONISTS Claude Debussy…Erik Satie…I could go on all day and it’d all be 100% vital to me.
What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?
It’s funny, but spending time with contemporary dancers and watching how they approach art creation has left a big impression on my musicianship. There’s something so liberated and spontaneous in those that I have met, I can feel how my hands act differently on my instruments now as if their dance has infiltrated and blended with my sound. Artists can be so closed off and isolated sometimes, this is a real lesson in opening your eyes and letting something new and organic into your world.
Tell us about your single ‘Reflets’?
This is what it’s about…Sometimes you can’t fight against what’s really in your soul, sometimes things have to come to light, and it might be traumatic or painful but sometimes that’s just the price to pay to be your true self. Reflet is all about being possessed by a spirit, something dark and terrifying but strangely alluring, it’s about trying to fight against it and failing horribly. You’ll see it in the video. It’s really about my own path to becoming an artist and coming to this moment of releasing my first songs.
What have you got lined up for 2022?
THE RELEASES!! I have another single coming out on 6th April with a super exciting spoken word collab on it. My debut EP coming out on the May/29th of April, literally can’t wait. Gigs and shows to support the release TBC, I’m not so good with dates. I’ve made three pieces for a ballet film premiering in April, I guess you have to go to my insta to find out.
