Real Future is a retrofuturistic treat for the ears from Matt DeAngelis, a Jersey-based singer and songwriter. With this latest single, Matt makes the brilliant choice to create a futuristic song with an 80s flavour, complete with a toe-tapping beat and a vocal performance infused with inspiration from some of his biggest musical influences, such as Elton John and Billy Joel.

Throughout the track, a jagged, synthesized beat pulses with electricity and gives the track such an exhilarating feeling. Matt’s vocals have a vintage quality, tying in with the synths and guitar of this track that transports listeners back in time to the 1980s.

On the surface, Real Future appears to be solely an upbeat, catchy track with some lyrical musings about what the future may hold. There is, however, a deeper meaning to Matt’s writing.

Matt tells us, ‘’The song is partly inspired by the new world we are now living in since the start of the pandemic which seems to have changed many aspects of our lives.’’

A closer look at the lyrics of Real Future reveals what Matt imagines the future may hold. The opening lines describe flames coming from the sky, leaving Matt wondering, ‘’what am I to do?’’ This sense of hopelessness is derived from real fears we face today, such as climate change, which is something that Matt takes very seriously.

”This song is about a dream that I had where I envisioned what the world will be like in the future. I describe what I saw in my dream where I was driving down a highway and seeing catastrophic events.”

With his creative use of momentum and variations in both rhythm and tempo, Matt keeps the listener on their toes, while subtly making a commentary on what lies ahead of us in the Real Future – whatever it may be, we better get ready for it.

The contrast of the ominous meaning behind the song, combined with the dynamic and exciting vibe of Matt’s sound, is some seriously clever music production, and it’s this kind of artistry that takes Real Future to an entirely different level.
