Maddie Park: finding harmony within the overwhelming

"It's about the fear that your life is passing you by. The fear that comes with having absolutely nothing figured out and no idea what's going to happen next."

We caught up with Korean American R&B pop artist Maddie Park for some QuickFire Questions as she shares her recent single “no fcks“. Honey smooth vocals on the track convey confessional lyrics that relate that sense of confusion and uncertainty of being in one’s early 20s. With influences such as SZA, Ariana Grande, NIKI and Jhene Aiko, Park’s airy track conveys a sense of delicate strength, unassumingly powerful.

Can you share a bit more on the background behind ‘no fcks’?

‘no fcks’ is about the fear that your life is passing you by. The fear that comes with having absolutely nothing figured out and no idea what’s going to happen next. When I wrote it, I was so afraid to go after my dream of becoming a singer, and I think that fear manifested itself in every moment of my life. I felt myself getting older with every passing second, like time was slipping away and leaving me behind. With no fcks, just feelings.

I recorded ‘no fcks’ over four different sessions, with just me and the producer. I was really hard on myself throughout the process, I think because I put so much pressure on myself to make it sound “perfect.” I’m thankful I stuck with it and trusted the process.

What has your musical journey been like so far?

I’ve always loved music and singing! When I was little, I used to get in trouble for singing at the dinner table and taking too long in the shower (my favorite place to sing!) and that love for singing never went away. One of my favorite parts of this journey has been connecting with people all over the world, who inspire me every day to work harder to learn and grow as an artist.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

Allow yourself to be who you are, right now.

What do you like to do outside of music?

I love reading and listening to podcasts (specifically true crime shows)! I also love to spend time with my dog (:

What are your plans for the rest of this year?

I’m working on new releases (my next one is coming May 13th!) and building towards an EP. I hope you’ll be a part of this journey with me ♡
