Linn Koch-Emmery’s ‘Borderline Iconic’: A raw passage of growth and fragility

"I thought a lot about who I was without medication. I went from child to adult on anti depressants, the care always said that it might grow out with some luck, that the years could somehow file away feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and melancholy"

Linn Koch-Emmery, the Swedish indie-rock sensation, has wowed fans again with Borderline Iconic after her headline show at The Social in London.

Borderline Iconic is an 11-track sonic bliss that delves deep into Linn Koch-Emmery’s personal experiences. Teaming up with acclaimed British producer Pete Robertson, co-founder of The Vaccines, Koch-Emmery has crafted a cohesive album that solidifies her position as a soaring talent in the indie music scene.

The album explores a variety of emotions as Koch-Emmery draws from her childhood experiences, particularly her diagnosis of bipolar disorder at the age of 18, later redefined as ADHD, and the subsequent medication she has been on for most of her life. This introspective journey is reflected in the raw and authentic nature of the album, making it a contemporary rock gem that has been years in the making.

Working with Pete Robertson, who has previously collaborated with artists like Beabadoobee, Koch-Emmery was encouraged to dig deeper into her emotions and confront her mental health struggles head-on.

Koch-Emmery reveals: “I thought a lot about who I was without medication. I went from child to adult on anti depressants, the care always said that it might grow out with some luck, that the years could somehow file away feelings of hopelessness, anxiety, and melancholy. Looking back, it makes me angry. What a fate to leave a teenager to, pills and hoping for luck”

For Koch-Emmery, Borderline Iconic represents a significant step towards embracing her true self and confronting the parts of her identity that she has kept at a distance:

“I’ve kept certain emotions at a distance both in my personal life and in my music and needed a degree of humor to approach what burns. It has been a way to talk about what hurts in a way where I feel more comfortable. Pete has both strengthened and intensified that part of my expression I’ve probably been most uncomfortable to show. It feels like a step towards my own mental boiling point.”

Born in Hamburg, Germany, and raised in Norrköping, Sweden, Koch-Emmery’s passion for music as an escape drove her journey to solo success, overcoming setbacks in forming a band with her twin sister and friends.

Since her 2018 EP Waves and acclaimed 2021 debut album Being the Girl, which earned her a Swedish Grammy nomination, Koch-Emmery has ascended. With performances alongside Liam Gallagher, Los Bitchos, and appearances at festivals like Roskilde and Bestival, her star power shines brightly.

With Borderline Iconic, Linn Koch-Emmery invites listeners on a journey of reflection, awareness, and growth, solidifying her status as an emerging icon.
