Left on Read are an Irish alt-rock band that have been steadily taking the indie music world by storm, going from strength to strength since their formation in 2020. Emerging from Limerick, Ireland, the lads have been making waves in the indie music scene since their debut. Their latest release, Dreams, is a poignant power ballad that will tug at your heartstrings, inspired by the lead singer and song’s writer experience of losing a loved one, and the overwhelming feelings that arise throughout the turbulent journey of grief.
Dreams is not just an indie pop rock ballad with powerful vocals, stirring electric guitar solos and dynamic drums all coming together to create a tenacious, well-crafted song. It’s also a message to the beyond, with the track’s inspiration coming from the vivid dreams of lead singer and songwriter Steven Tynan, after he reunited with his grandfather in a dream shortly after he passed away. He explains, ‘’I knew it was a dream but I didn’t care, it was just nice to see him again… A little bit on the nose I guess!”
The song opens with delicate, hopeful piano notes and lead singer Steven’s soft, melodic voice, drawing the listener in. As the track progresses, so too does the intensity of emotion, as the singer unpacks his feelings with the music serving as a medium of expression for the overwhelming emotions that come with the passing of a loved one. Through his heartfelt lyrics, the singer describes the bittersweet experience of encountering a departed soul in a dream, and the myriad of complex emotions that this surreal occurence can bring up.
“I didn’t really have any goals or expectations for this song to start out,” admits Steven. “I sort of wrote it for myself, to help come to terms with losing my grandfather. It wasn’t until years later, when the guys heard it, that they convinced me that people needed to hear it.”
As the track evolves from the soft, minimal opening, with piano serving as the main accompaniment, Steven’s voice builds gradually, gaining incredible strength and depth, successfully delivering the message of the song with a compelling intensity. The track culminates in an impactful finale, with a wicked guitar solo echoing the song’s melody, colliding with the clashing of the drums in this breathtaking crescendo of emotion.
Every ounce of grief, heartache and genuine sorrow can be felt in this track, crafted with a sense of vulnerability that is truly admirable. The jewel in the crown of this track is certainly within the lyrics, which are brimming with authenticity as lead singer Steven speaks directly to his grandfather, expressing gratitude for cherished memories and savouring the chance to spend some time with him again if it is only within his dreams.
