Queens musician and scholar Kevin Anglade transforms research and lived experience into socially conscious hip-hop on his forthcoming album, The Black Box.
The project examines Black identity, systemic inequality, capitalism, colonialism and the cultural conflicts affecting marginalised communities. Anglade uses hip-hop as a platform for criticism, reflection and wider conversation.
Album highlights Branded and THE LOX establish its central direction. Driven by trap and electronic production, Branded examines life after prison and the psychological, economic and social barriers that continue long after release.
The track is extended through an accompanying Substack article exploring mass incarceration, prison labour and the economic structures connected to the prison system.
By connecting music, research and written commentary, The Black Box develops beyond a conventional album release.
