JULIA BRENNAN QuickFire Questions

By Frank Bell

Specialising in dramatic and deeply emotive pop piano ballads, LA-based musician Julia Brennan has unveiled her latest single “how does it feel”. Following on from the success of her previous single “pure love” earlier in the year, the singer hopes to share her stories within her music, captivating and inspiring throughout.

We chatted to Julia to find out more about “how does it feel”, her biggest inspirations and what she has planned for the rest of this year.

What was the first song you learned to play on a musical instrument?

I started piano around age 4 or 5, so I don’t quite remember the first song I learned. But I do remember that whenever I would get frustrated with my lessons or consider quitting, I told myself I couldn’t quit until I taught myself Alan Menken’s “Go the Distance” from Hercules. I refused to bring it to my lessons because I wanted to teach myself, and once I did, I was too hooked to quit.

Who are some of your biggest musical influences and why do they inspire you?

I really, really love Billie Eilish, Chelsea Cutler, and Gracie Abrams. I’m obsessed with their writing. To me, the way a song makes you feel is so important, but the words are the most important. Just reading their lyrics elicits emotion, so the song as a whole just feels like an experience. Their music also feels really genuine and unique as to who they are as artists. Also, their voices are incredible.

Can you tell us about your latest single, “how does it feel”?

“how does it feel”, as much as it sounds kind of vengeful, it’s really not. It was written more to showcase how, when you go through a breakup and you’re the one who feels more hurt, they don’t understand. But when they go through another breakup and they’re left hurt, they finally get it. It’s supposed to be that “Do you see how bad you hurt me; do you see how you made me feel” moment. Like, I wasn’t crazy, I was just broken, and now you get it.

What messages do you hope people take away from your music?

My music is very personal for me, written about very personal experiences – some of my upcoming stuff even more so, so I just really hope that people can relate to it and resonate with it. I love when I hear a song that describes my situation that I didn’t know how to put into words, so I hope it can be that for people.

What can we expect from you as 2020 draws to a close?

New music! “how does it feel” comes out TODAY September 25, and I’m hoping to get another song out before the end of the year with more on the way!
