Congratulations on the release of your upcoming EP, ‘if you only knew’. Could you elaborate on the inspiration behind the title and what the EP’s overall theme is?
Thank you! The title track on the EP, if you only knew, is a deeply personal song addressed to my mom about dark feelings I had when I was younger that i felt too scared to talk about. As I got older, and more comfortable talking about this I found myself really leaning on my friends and family. I want people’s take away from any of my music, but especially if you only knew is that you are not alone in your struggles. And people really really care about you. It’s scary to speak up about what’s going on in your brain but it’s so important.
Your EP features six tracks, all co-written by you, including the viral pop hit ‘i wish you cheated’. How do you approach the songwriting process, and what themes or experiences do you find yourself drawn to when crafting your music?
I love writing songs so much. The process is always a little different, but it usually starts with a melody for me. I’ll go into the studio with the idea and brainstorm and talk, sometimes for hours, until it feels perfect. My music is thematically sad as my feelings are where I draw almost all my inspiration from. Songwriting is therapy for me!
You mentioned that this year has been a roller coaster for you. How has the journey as an independent artist shaped the sound and emotional depth of the ‘if you only knew’ EP?
It’s been a really beautiful process putting this ep together. I’ve been writing it for over a year. I think being an independent artist has really let me explore every part of my personality and let me be exactly who I am, which has absolutely had a major and beautiful impact on my music.
’i wish you cheated’ and ‘blame’s on me’ have been viral successes, accumulating a total of 130 million streams. Could you provide some insights into the creative process behind these tracks and discuss how the audience response has influenced your musical journey?
The creative process for both of these was actually very similar. I walked into the studio very upset over my relationship & breakup…and just started ranting. Somewhere along the line I would have said “and the ‘blame’s on me’ or ‘i wish you would cheated! and the ideas were born. The success behind these 2 songs is unbelievable to me, and keeps me beyond excited to release more music and share more stories. it’s also helped me with the heartache! Haha
You recently toured with K-Pop sensation Eric Nam and had your late-night TV debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. What have these experiences done for you as an artist and what were some memorable moments from them?
They have been huge core memories for me now. Both dreams come true. The most insane memory is playing the Fallon, then running off stage into a van that brought us to the Eric Nam show that night across town. They were only an hour apart, and it was a 45 minute drive. I got to the venue, ran inside and right onto stage! It felt like i was in an action movie!
With a rapidly growing fan base and millions of streams across platforms, how do you connect with your audience, and what role do platforms like TikTok play in reaching new listeners?
tiktok and instagram play absolutely instrumental rolls in connecting with my fans. i read every comment and try to engage as much as i can. i post nearly everyday and i feel like over the last few years we’ve really grown up together. that’s why the internet is such a beautiful place! you can connect with millions of people at any second of any day.
What was the first album you purchased?
It was in the lonely hour by Sam Smith! They are one of my biggest musical inspirations, and if you listen to that album, I’m sure you can hear the influence!
Which artists are you listening to right now?
Listening to the new SZA album on repeat!
Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as an artist, especially following the release of ‘if you only knew’? Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that your fans can be excited about?
I have so much I’m excited about and soooo many aspirations…But I would say the major ones are putting out my debut album next year and going on a full world tour!
