What was the first album you bought?’
Spice, by the Spice Girls! I must have been 8. I used to sing the songs over and over, with the lyrics in the booklet inside the CD case, not understanding any of it. That booklet got so used, I remember it falling apart and almost turning into dust!
Who are some of your biggest musical inspirations and why?
These days I’m blown away by what comes out. I’m eternally grateful to the Spotify algorithms, that have made me discover artists from around the world and their most bizarre and wondrous universes: Susumu Yokota, Tsuzing, Jacques, Den Sorte Skole, Aisha Devi, Skee Mask… a lot of techno strangely, when it hasn’t been a genre I’ve been very attracted to until now. It’s definitely influencing my production in new surprising ways.
What are some non-musical inspirations that motivate your music?
I always write about subjects that are close to me in real life. I’m not very fast when it comes to processing things that happen to me, nor very good at acknowledging my emotions. Often the song I will write will seem to me as if it was totally unrelated. Then a few months later I’ll look back and realise it described exactly what I was going through at that point in time, how I was feeling. The inspirations are often unconscious – I truly believe songs are a way my psyche delivers messages to my conscious self. A little bit like what Jung thought of dreams.
Tell us about your new EP Safe + Bound.
Safe + Bound is the place where I used to live for many years, until last year’s spring. That’s when I came out of a year-long episode of depression, and when these songs started to come out. It felt like going through a portal between two dimensions, and I wasn’t the same person when I landed. The other side, the here and now I had never, until then, “embodied”, that is, occupied fully with my mind in my body, with my feet on the ground, has been so alien and brutally surreal to me. These songs are like little amulets I collected over a year, each representing a feeling, an emotion that, once upon a time, I would have tried to bury deep down. They’re reminders that there’s beauty everywhere. Even in loneliness and chaos…
Past Safe + Bound’ what can we expect from you for 2020?
I have started writing the next chapter. I’m not sure yet if it will be an album or an EP… All I know is that it’s the most thrilling so far, and I can’t wait to see what shape it will take…
