Just after freshly releasing the title track of her forthcoming debut EP ‘Up’ (on Astonishing Records), Stevenage born, young and truly talented singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and rapper Gabz, opens up to FM about her experience on BGT, the music industry and reveals her obsession for Fifth Harmony while dreaming of a collaboration with Jessie J and Ed Sheeran…
Here’s her massive first single ‘Lighters (The One)’ – self-written at age 13 – which reached No 6 in the official UK charts, a spot on the ‘Now 85’ album and now has over 3 million hits on YouTube…
Hello Gabz 🙂 How are you today?
I’m great thank you!
Can you tell us all we should really know about your new single and video ‘Up’?
Up is a song which I wrote about positivity and good vibes as if you work hard you can do anything! I filmed the video on a rooftop in London as the vibe up there really fits well with the theme of the song and we had clips from performances I’ve done so If you’ve ever been to see me live you might find yourself in the video!
What do you think when people like Snoop Dogg, Simon Cowell and Alesha Dixon says nice things about you…?
Absolutely amazing! Having support is awesome but especially when it comes from really talented people high up in the industry! I’m so thankful! From playing the violin at 6 to Britain’s Got Talent, ‘Lighters (The One)’ and now your new single ‘Up’…How do you approach the music industry now?
I always knew it was a tough industry but now I have experienced a small part of it I’ve learnt a lot and just know that I need to work really hard! That’s what a lot of my songs are about that I’ve written – working hard to do and be what you want to!
What’s the best and worst thing about being on TV talent shows like Britain’s Got Talent?
I had a really great experience on BGT and would say the best part is getting the experience and a glimpse into the industry and also the opportunity it gives you to reach a bigger audience! I haven’t really experienced any negatives from the show but I can imagine if you aren’t ready or if it doesn’t go well it might damage your confidence.
What are your dreams and goals?
My dream is to be a really successful singer/songwriter/musician and hopefully producer in the future! I’d really just love to make a living from what I love – touring, writing and recording music! I’d also love to be able to inspire others, promote a message and in the future be able to support more charities and make a big difference.
Who are your musical and non-musical influences?
Musically I’ve been really inspired and influenced by other singer-songwriters like Jessie J and Ed Sheeran but non-musically definitely my parents, both my parents are really supportive and I’m constantly inspired by their incredible work ethic!
Are you planning any live shows and what will they be like?
Since BGT I’ve been supporting a lot of other artists at events all across the country! Your readers should definitely check out my events page on my website and see if I’m performing near them soon! gabzofficial.com/events Hopefully in the future I’ll start headlining my own gigs!
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
I’d love to collaborate with Jessie J, Ed Sheeran or at the moment I’m obsessed with Fifth Harmony so would love to feature on one of their songs!
What do you have planned next?
I have an EP coming out soon after the single and another music video!! Very exciting times, I really hope everyone likes the new music!
