London-based newcomer Ashleigh Bankx is ready to get us all in the mood for Valentine’s Day this weekend, with sultry new single Angel and the accompanying visuals. Ashleigh is the latest singer to emerge from the UK’s rapidly growing R&B/soul scene, but it’s hard to believe she is only just starting out; Angel is an impressive piece of work, both sonically and visually, and does a fine job of highlighting Ashleigh’s distinctive and richly soulful vocal tone that hooks you in from the first note.
Led off by a famed quote from the late, great Nina Simone, the track hears Ashleigh talk about love and unity. Speaking on the release, she says, “Angel is about self-liberation, understanding and valuing yourself through past experiences with relationships and society. The song is about black love and centres around the concept of self-love, self-confidence, self-pride and the unity of and journey between two lovers. I want the listener to determine what mood and emotion they feel when they listen to the song.”
Influenced by the likes of Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse, Angel taps into a nostalgic neo-soul sound, which sets her apart from many of her contemporaries in today’s modern R&B/soul landscape. And as far as debut singles go, it doesn’t get much better. With plans to drop much more new music in 2021, we can’t wait to see what’s next from this promising young talent.
Angel is available to buy/stream 12th February on all platforms: HERE
